Salman Khan-starrer Sultan becomes highest grossing Yash Raj movie

Salman Khan-starrer Sultan has emerged as the highest-grossing film in the history of India’s leading movie production banner Yash Raj Films (YRF) which has been in operations for over four decades. The Ali Abbas Zafar directorial, which released on July 7, has so far collected Rs 585 crore worldwide (domestic – Rs 421 crore and international – Rs 164 crore).

According to a statement from the YRF banner, Sultan is now the third highest-grossing movie in the history of Indian cinema. The sports drama film features Salman and Anushka Sharma as wrestlers. In the opening weekend itself, it had crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide.

YRF is known for giving Hindi movie buffs a bouquet of romantic and action films since its inception. It was founded by the late Yash Chopra, an iconic filmmaker whose credentials as a director include films such as Chandni, Lamhe, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhie, Dil To Pagal Hai and his last directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

The present head honcho of the banner is his son Aditya Chopra, who has helmed movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. His next movie is Befikre, starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor.

Earlier, fans of Salman Khan claimed that the film’s producers Yash Raj Films were giving out much lower amounts of what the film was making as compared to what trade was claiming. They even made the hashtag #YRFStopReducingSULTANFigures trend on Twitter. They claimed that Salman had a deal with YRF wherein he will get a big share of profit if the India business is over Rs 300 crore, according to entertainment website FilmiBeat. These deals are common, especially with the Khans.

Mohenjo Daro movie review: Hrithik Roshan, Ashutosh Gowariker ditch old for seriously antique

It beats me how so much time and effort can be spent on creating something meant to be jaw-dropping, but which leaves you sighing at the sheer waste of it all. Just when you think the plot is shifting just a fraction, out pops yet another item number, complete with whirling dervishes (remember Jodhaa Akbar?) and belly dancers: how can you have a Hrithik film without getting him on the floor, even if it is daubed in mud?

Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro social media review: The film gets thumbs up from Hrithik fans

In Lagaan, there were the evil Brits who wanted more tax from the poor ‘gaon-waalon’. In Mohenjo Daro too, along comes the demand for more ‘kar-vasooli’. Gowariker also filches from the many Hollywood epics which dump their heroes into an arena and have them fight for their lives: Hrithik faces off with two iron-chested cannibals (Bedi terms them, helpfully, ‘narbhakshi’) who grunt and growl.

And just in case we were missing something, Sarman does a Noah, launches a massive rescue op, and saves scores of humans and animals, to swelling background music. By then, we’re so exhausted that we let the waters of Sindhu Ma float over us, and wait for things to get over More.....

Mohenjo Daro movie review: Hrithik Roshan, Ashutosh Gowariker ditch old for seriously antique

Mohenjo Daro movie cast: Hrithik Roshan, Pooja Hegde, Kabir Bedi, Arunoday Singh, Nitish Bardwaj, Manish Chaudhary

Mohenjo Daro movie director: Ashutosh Gowariker

If you had to recreate an ancient civilisation, what would you do? If you are Ashutosh Gowariker, and have had lots of experience in excavating the past (Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar), you would scale it up. Instead of a few hundred years, you would go back a couple of thousands, ditching the merely old for the seriously antique.

Mohenjo Daro, set in Mohenjo-daro of the Indus Valley civilisation, is bigger but certainly not better than these two Gowariker’s earlier outings. The sepia tone of the earth and the dwellings is balanced by an array of costumery: everyone looks like they have been handed out unstructured earth-toned garments, which follow the latest fashion du jour. And lest you thought they were not accessorised to the hilt in 2016 BC, perish it: the villainous chief wears a headgear of horns (the happily hamming Kabir Bedi, who carries it off with a raffish air) to an alarmingly tall crown of what looks like feathers, coins and shells sported by the leading lady (the debutant Pooja Hegde, who looks much better without, and may fare better in her next).

Mohenjo Daro quick movie review: Hrithik Roshan, Ashutosh Gowariker win on scale, lose on substance

In between is leading man Hrithik Roshan as poor indigo farmer Sarman, a resident of village Samri of the Sindh province, who has set his heart on going to neighbouring big town Mohenjo-daro. That is where, he is convinced, lie his fate and fortune, and an animal with one horn.

Rustom movie review: Akshay Kumar film is a dreary piece of work

Right from the build-up, featuring what is meant to be a thrilling boat ride and a fight with a fake-looking crocodile, all the better to show off Hrithik’s rippling chest and ripping valour, Mohenjo Daro is a plod, and a heavily borrowed one to boot: the entry into a forbidden town (which strongly reminds us of Baahubali), the romance with a pretty stranger, the rivalry with a muscle-bound fellow, the unravelling of dark secrets, the saving of a town from a beastly ruler—we’ve seen so many versions of it before.

Akshay Kumar’s Rustom day 1 box office collections: The film to earn about Rs 15 crore

Akshay Kumar’s Rustom opened on Friday amid mixed reviews but a strong hold at the box office. Considered one of the big releases of the year, Rustom stars Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Arjan Bajwa in important roles.

Rustom opened at 50 percent occupancy, which is a good number for a Friday. This is Akshay’s third big release of the year. The actor’s Airlift and Housefull 3 have already earned over Rs 100 crore at the box office.

In certain centres, Rustom ran to packed houses. It received a wonderful response in Mumbai, Delhi and other northern circuits. The film didn’t get a lot of traction in south India. Given the occupancy, Rustom is likely to earn around Rs 15 crore in box office collection. The film opened on 2300 screens.

The Tinu Suresh Desai-directed crime-mystery film has garnered a positive response from the audience in the first show and the word of mouth is expected to take its business upwards in the afternoon and evening shows.

Rustom has been made approximately at a cost of Rs 50 crore. Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, Rustom is inspired by the 50s Nanavati murder case. Akshay plays a navy officer who finds his wife, played by Ileana D’Cruz, is committing infidelity. The movie changed the Indian judicial system.

The film went head-to-head with Hrithik Roshan-starrer Mohenjo Daro, a romance set in the Indus Valley civilisation. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Mohenjo Daro is the debut of Pooja Hegde.

Both the films get this extended bIndependence Day weekend to prove their worth. While Rustom has sprinted ahead, period dramas historically take time to catch the audience’s fancy. (Rustom movie review: Akshay film is flat-out dull)

Dear America, even Barack Obama knows SRK, stop racially profiling him

His face can launch a million brands across the globe. He was the only actor whose name was used by Barack Obama in his speech while in India. And only three English alphabets are needed to describe him, SRK. Yet America chooses to racially profile Mr. Khan by unnecessarily detaining him every time he steps his foot there.

Dear America, I am not seeking preferential treatment for an Indian VIP but demanding you to extend SRK the same ordinary courtesy that you reserve for passengers with a non-Muslim surname. To racially profile a person like Shah Rukh Khan — not once, not twice but thrice — reeks of arrogance on your part. Either that or you are just innocently ignorant about SRK despite the actor’s legendary popularity in your holier than thou land. I’m inclined to believe it is the former that makes you detain King Khan time and again.

Is it too difficult to recognise a man whose famous film dialogue your own President eloquently quoted in his speech while touring India? Maybe you are not interested in your President’s speeches so I will give you the benefit of doubt in this case. What about him being the second richest actor in the world? Perhaps the American airport officials are living under a rock. So let’s overlook that too. From under that rock, we are sure you use Facebook and Twitter.

A mere mention of SRK on these microblogging sites will throw up thousands of SRK fan club. Not to mention, the man himself commands 20.7 million followers on Twitter while Oscar winner Leonardo Di Caprio has only 13 million. Now you may say that we are the second most populous nation and hence the followers. Let’s chuck that out too. What about your own home-grown Los Angeles Times writing SRK is the world’s biggest movie superstar? Yeah well they always write that to sell their wares. Big deal, no? (Shah Rukh Khan accepts US envoys’ apologies, says ‘respects protocol but it’s inconvenient’)

Let’s look at some facts that I have pulled out from your own Google about SRK for your benefit.

Shah Rukh Khan has been conferred with top French civilian award – Knight of the Legion of Honor.

He has been conferred the honour of Datuk, a Malaysian honour equivalent to British knighthood. (Enough is enough, Shah Rukh Khan should stop flying to the US)

The University of Edinburgh has conferred him with a honorary doctorate.

He is the only movie star whose presence in the Gulf region can bring traffic to a standstill.

When he made a quick stopover at Google’s headquarter in your land, he had a jam-packed audience listening to him in rapt attention. (Shah Rukh Khan detained at US airport again, tweets ‘every damn time’)

When Apple’s Ceo Tim Cook was in India, it was at SRK’s sea facing home that he preferred to wine, dine and let his hair down.

Owing to the paucity of time, we will stop here but the next time SRK arrives in the USA, dear American airport officials please remember his last name is Khan and he is not a terrorist...More...

Shah Rukh Khan detained yet again at airport, diplomat apologises

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was yet again detained by immigration department officials . This time at the Los Angeles airport.

SRK on early Friday morning took to Twitter to share details of his harrowing time at the Los Angeles airport. The tweeted about his frustration of getting detained 'every damn time' by the getting detained immigration officials A senior US diplomat of Indian origin has apologised to Shah Rukh Khan.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Biswal tweeted: "Sorry for the hassle at the airport, @iamsrk - even American diplomats get pulled for extra screening!" The actor yesterday was spotted at the Mumbai airport along with daughter Suhana and son Aryan .more...

This is not the first time that Shah Rukh, one of Hindi film industry's most successful stars, was detained at a US airport.

In 2012, he was detained at a New York airport for two hours when he had arrived to visit Yale University, where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow.

In 2009, he was stopped at the Newark Airport, New Jersey, and was released after two hours at the intervention of the Indian consulate in New York.

"I was really hassled at the American Airport because of my name being Khan. It was absolutely uncalled for. I felt angry and humiliated," said Shah Rukh, who was then heading towards Chicago to participate in an Independence Day celebration event.

"It is a Muslim name and I think the name is common on their checklist," he had then said.

Kriti Sanon always speaks the truth, says Sushant Singh Rajput

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput says the clarification given by his "Raabta" co-star Kriti Sanon on their link-up rumours is right as she voices the truth.

Last month, the actress tried to put an end to dating rumours with Sushant by slamming such reports and calling them untrue
When asked to comment on the reports, Sushant said, "Kriti always speaks the truth. Whatever she said is right." The 30-year-old actor was speaking to reporters last night at the trailer launch of his upcoming film "MS Dhoni: The Untold Story", the biopic of Indian ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

While Sushant was busy working on the movie, his personal life garnered spotlight since his break-up with long-time girlfriend Ankita Lokhande last year. The "Kai Po Che!" star also suffered a rib injury while practising a cricketing shot for "Dhoni".more...

Sushant, however, said neither the break-up nor the physical injury deterred him from focusing on the film. "Injury was in body, heart break was in heart, but the mind was completely fine so it was okay. None of the two things affected me while shooting the film," he said.

When asked when he will be tying the knot, the actor said, "Let me get a girl first!" Directed by Neeraj Pandey, "MS Dhoni: The Untold Story" also stars Anupam Kher, Kiara Advani and Disha Patani. It is scheduled for release on September 30.

'Shivaay' actress Erika Kaar: More intimidated by Kajol than Ajay

She may be making her Bollywood debut opposite Ajay Devgn in "Shivaay" but Polish actress Erika Kaar was more intimated and star-struck by his wife, Kajol.

Erika says she was apprehensive to talk to Kajol because the Bollywood actress has a huge fan following in Poland. "Actually, I was a lot more intimidated by Kajol than Ajay. With Ajay I was like 'Hello man!' With Kajol it was like 'Hello ma'am.' I was trying to be very respectful. I did not talk much with her," Erika told PTI in an interview.

"We know Kajol because she is huge worldwide. In Poland, when you hear Kajol, people start screaming. They are such huge fans. We also knew 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'. It is huge there."more...

According to Erika, her friends even have night outs where they dance to the popular track "Bole Chudiyan" from the Karan Johar directed romantic-drama.

"When we have ladies night, my friends are such huge fans that they watch 'Bole Chudiyan' and dance. They don't know the lyrics, nothing, but they love it.

"So when they learnt that the person I'll be working with is Kajol's husband, they forced me to show him the video of how they are dancing. They love her. But I did not show the video to him. I am not crazy!"

When asked if she showed the video to Kajol, Erika quipped, "I was scared to tell her. I did not." "Shivaay" is an upcoming action thriller, produced and

directed by Devgan. Erika says she met Kajol while shooting for the film but they did not interact much.

"We met in Bulgaria and then in Mussoorie. But since I knew Ajay was working so hard on the project, once his family came, we all tried to give them their quality time."

The film is Devgn's second directorial venture after the 2008 romantic-drama "U Me Aur Hum".

Erika, who has worked in TV series like "Blondynka" and "Az po suffit!", says she avoided watching any Bollywood film before her movie as she did not want to follow a certain pattern.

"We agreed with Ajay and the rest of the guys that I shouldn't watch any Bollywood films. Ajay told me that he wanted me to stay 'pure', as in fresh and unconscious of what I am playing.

"So, that I act naturally as I do in drama schools and not get affected by perhaps something that is typical for Bollywood... If I watch a Bollywood movie I would be like 'oh my God! I need to do exactly like she is doing.'" The actress, however, caught up with some Bollywood films later, including "Bajirao Mastani".

"I was forbidden to watch any Bollywood stuff during shooting. But by the end of it, I did watch 'Bajirao Mastani', some songs and clips. Even Ajay gave me his DVD rental shop membership, and said 'call them and say what do you want to watch. You want to watch me and Kajol? Call them.'"

Salman Khan Will Work With International Actress, Zhu Zhu, In His Next Movie, “Tubelight”

After the super successful film release of Sultan, Salman Khan will star in Kabir Khan's next movie, Tubelight. The name sounds a little weird and unconventional but that's the director's style. Rumour has it that the movie is based on the 1962 Sino-Indian war but everyone is being very tight lipped about the script and the characters.
The shooting for the film has begun in Ladakh and apart from the Khan, the movie stars the stunning Chinese actress, Zhu Zhu. Zhu Zhu rose to fame as a VJ on MTV China and has also done several Chinese movies. We're loving the pictures of the two (well, mainly of her, as Salman really isn't a favourite)....more....

The latest to join the bandwagon is Alia Bhatt, who dressed up in a bright yellow sari with a navy cap on her head, and grooved to Raveena's hit number Tip Tip Barsa Pani. While we still love the original dance moves, Alia's crazy grooves are SO. HOT. In the midst of the video, she asks you to stop watching her and go watch Rustom, instead. Yes, ma'am!....more...

Sanjay Gadhvi on directing another 'Dhoom': Never say never

Director Sanjay Gadhvi, who directed the first two installments of the popular franchise 'Dhoom', says that he is open to directing another part but is currently working on something independent.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Indian Mobile Festival where he was a jury member, Gadhvi, asked if it was over for him with the "Dhoom" franchise, said: "Not really. Never say never. Nothing is over till it's actually over. I'm always open to making another 'Dhoom'. We'll see."
The three parts of the film, with John Abraham, Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan respectively as villains, with Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra as cops, have done extremely well at the box-office. Gadhvi was replaced by Vijay Krishna Acharya in the third part, a film which is among the highest grossing films in the industry.

The makers, Yash Raj Films had revealed a poster for "Dhoom Reloaded" last year, which was assumed to be about the fourth part. There were reports that Ranveer Singh and Salman Khan were being considered for the film, with Salman later denying the news.

About who would be the antagonist this time, Gadhvi said: "You have to speak to Yash Raj Films; I think they will have the best knowledge. What I wanted to do in 'Dhoom' 1 and 2, I did it and it is there for everyone to remember, so it is a job well done."

Any upcoming projects? "I'm actually a little bit tired making the hardcore, commercial masala movies, so I am also working on something independent type, surprising, shocking.

"My dream of making a hardcore, commercial film got fulfilled with aDhoom' and aDhoom 2'. So I am looking at making some interesting, surprising kind of films... I am working on multiple scripts right now," said Gadhvi who has also directed "Kidnap" and "Ajab Ghazabb Love" after "Dhoom 2".

John Abraham: Sylvester Stallone influenced my life to large extent

Actor John Abraham says Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone has influenced his life in a huge way.
"Sylvester Stallone actually influenced my life to a large extent. In a way, he is also a role model for me... I believe that there is a little bit of Stallone in me," John told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The "Dishoom" star says it is because of the "Cliffhanger" star he got into Hindi film industry.

"A lot of people don't know that Sylvester Stallone is the reason that why I got into films. I saw his film 'Rocky 4', a boxing film, and I was enamoured by the fact that a man could look so tough and fight another tough guy," said John, who has featured in several action films too.

"I said that 'I need to be tough and I went to the corner of the street and started having bananas to put on weight. I was still in college at that time'," he added.

On the work front, John will next be seen in "Force 2", which also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Tahir Raj Bhasin.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has taken to Twitter to express his disappointment at being "detained" by US authorities at Los Angeles International Airport.

It is not clear why Khan was detained, or for how long.

In 2012, Indians reacted angrily after Khan was detained for 90 minutes at the White Plains airport near New York.

And in 2009 Shah was detained for two hours at Newark airport and released after India's embassy intervened.
Khan, who flew into Los Angeles on Friday, tweeted:Although there was no comment from immigration officials, the US State Department's assistant secretary on south and central Asian affairs, Nisha Biswal, tweeted to Khan, saying she was "sorry for the hassle", adding that US diplomats also face this situation. In 2012, the actor arrived on a private plane and was on his way to Yale University for a function when he was stopped.

An Indian government minister said at the time that this "policy of detention and apology by the US cannot continue".

US customs and border protection authorities later expressed "profound" apologies for the incident.

Khan had later made light of the incident and joked about it.

"Whenever I start feeling arrogant about myself, I always take a trip to America. The immigration guys kick the star out of stardom," he told a gathering of students at Yale University.

Khan has appeared in more than 70 films and is considered one of India's most recognisable and popular celebrities....more...
